was the movie really that good? for some reason, the previews had made me think it won't be...and not because the previews DIDN'T look cool. In fact, the previews made me think it would be one of those movies that LOOKS awesome in previews, but sucks when you watch it

Yes, but how much more Batman could Bale be?
(Drau puts up the set....)
I've also heard that this movie ignores the other four (as well we all should)

I'm not going to get to see it until Sunday but from what I've heard it's everything Burton's flick SHOULD have been. I liked the '89 flick just fine but I always thought Burton missed a great opportunity to show Bat's back story. Glad someone finally did it right.

Never been much into Batman before, but I have a feeling this film may turn me into an uber-fan.

As a Batman fanatic, I can't say enough good things about this film.
Hollywood has finally done it.
They "got" Batman. Totally nailed it.
Bale moves like Batman, sounds like Batman, and IS Batman. He hides in shadows, pulls crooks outta nowhere, and disappears, just like in the comics. When Batman barrels his tank through Gotham, the look on his face during the amazing amounts of property damage is priceless.
Gotham City is perfect. Not 100% comic accurate, but a living, breathing, believable city. And after seeing the movie, you'll understand what director Christopher Nolan meant about being heavily influenced by Blade Runner. Especially cool was the placement of Arkham...
Batman Begins is very much a Nolan film: it's carefully paced, and a more realistic, psychological thriller... it just happens to star Batman. Yeah, there is some amazing action, but there are also some amazing performances. It's a genuine character-driven Summer Blockbuster.
The villains were perfectly portrayed. Gone are the over-the-top performances of Jack Nicholson, Danny DeVito, Jim Carrey, and Tommy Lee Jones. What we are given is believable, terrifying villains. You see exactly what makes the Scarecrow so demented and scary. And if you're a fan of Batman: The Animated Series' incarnation of Ra's al Ghul, you will not be disappointed. His dialogue and motivation are beat-for-beat Ra's al Ghul. He is very much a terrorist who wants nothing more than to shape mankind into his vision, starting with Gotham.
As for the set-up for the next film, my theatre went absolutely apeshit. The anticipation had been building, and it exploded at that very moment.
I can't wait for the next one.
